Keys to my heart...

I have a fascination with keys and doors. Not every key or door, it has to be old and interesting. I don’t know why, but, part of it must be from early memories of my childhood at my great aunts/uncles house in Zanzibar.

Zanzibar’s doors need no introduction but the locks and their clever, simple locking systems and the keys that lock away such precious items and homes are above all, beautifully crafted and often never seen. Then like many other coastal towns in East Africa, it has the same traditions and cultures as you would find down in Mombasa or Malindi and so are their traditional ‘locks’. I remember friends of the family or local market delivery boys knew how to open the door and secure it back on their way out (without the key!!) and friends who let themselves in and wait for my aunt/uncle in the ‘living room’.

Then there were others who lived up so ‘high’  they would put the key in a hat or basket tied to a rope and lower it to you to let yourself in. I used to look up and think of Rapunzel stuck in a tower but in fact it was only a few flights of stairs to and from the front door but who’s gonna walk up and down eh? Besides, no one really locked their doors then…

So, they are finally here... Arrived on Saturday but had way too much to do and only just got round to taking photographs of the final product which is printed on FSC certified stock, satin coated outside for better colour reproduction (and because I can't stand gloss (Most of the times!)) leaving the insides uncoated so that you can scribble your lovely wishes!

P.S: Excuse the look of the photos,  I am yet to invest in a 'photography studio' ;-p

Henry Part I

Henry, is a young Owl whose mother died or left under mysterious circumstances that no one knows about. All he has of her is a woolly jumper she knit for him to keep him warm as an Owlet. It has a red stain on it and a furry collar made from her very own small, soft under wing feathers.

Henry is a happy, playful and considerate owl but with every sunset, his heart sinks and sometimes it makes him cry and the red stain on his jumper turns bright and glows and takes on a shape no one in the forest has seen. You see, Henry is the only Owl in the forest that is afraid of the dark and all the nightly creatures and critters that come out to play laugh at Henry…

Fontmas Greetings!

Today's inspiration came from a gift given to me by a friend and colleague who loves all things typographic.
It reads:

The lettermaker of the twentieth century
has not got to be an inventor of letter
forms but simply a man of intelligence
and good will.
Whether in stone, wood, paint or metal

The common problem, yours mine, everyone's,
is–not to fancy what were fair in life
Provided it could be–but, finding first
What may be, then find out how to make it fair

and the word fair can be taken in both its
senses–it means both beautiful and just.

p.s: the yellow looked so much nicer before :(
Also, the entire set and others that I am still working on would be
lovelier if I could screen-print or letter-press maybe? (w/o ink) Hmm...
p.s.s: don't forget to put in your xmas card orders!

Birds & Bows Stationery

Here's something I am working on at the moment; every year, I have a few special clients and friends for whom I like to make Christmas Greeting cards (albeit e-cards). However, last year was a lot more special. But this year, I've run out of time and excuses so I started toying with the idea of another year of handmade cards... so far, I'm enjoying the sketching but I am not sure it says xmas yet... A twist like last years' cards might be the way to fuel both my sense of humor as well as creativity.  Hmmm, who knows... for now, I'll just enjoy my 'busted-birds' ;-p

Birds and Bows

P.S: Sorry about the line length on this blog. I am still a newbie!
Oh, and another thing, I know the above looks nothing like Christmas. I never promised it would ;-p
